Maison du Pilote
Architectural firm CCM2 (Urbalum Signature Lumière) used Lumenfacade luminaires to help pay tribute to the proud shipping history at the Maison du Pilote in Quebec City.
Home to the Corporation of Lower St Lawrence Marine Pilots, the Maison du Pilote has been central to Quebec City's shipping industry for nearly 150 years. As part of an extensive rejuvenation project, architects CCM2 (Urbalum Signature Lumière) developed a stacked shipping container concept, which pays tribute to the building's past.
To emphasize this concept, CCM2 used light.
"The lighting concept is directly linked to the architectural concept developed for the project, as it helps highlight this idea of stacked "boxes," contrasting colors and shapes," said Mathieu Morel, associate architect at CCM2.
To accomplish this, the firm used Lumenfacade luminaires in a 4000K color temperature. Mounted to supports in the façade, the luminaires graze the building's white panels, playing off shadows and interior lighting to accentuate lines and shapes.
"The Lumenfacade fixtures gave us an easily controlled light source that we could position close to the surface. This was essential, as to achieve the desired effect, the luminaires were installed roughly 12 inches (300mm) away from the surface," Morel said.
Durable and energy-efficient, the subtle lighting design draws attention to the building, reaffirming its importance along the St-Lawrence River, all while tipping its hat to the past.
Equipment specified:
10 x Lumenfacade HO (3', 4000K, 10 x 60)
5 x Lumenfacade HO (2', 4000K, 10 x 60)
4 x Lumenfacade HO (1', 4000K, 10 X 60)
The Lumenfacade fixtures gave us an easily controlled light source that we could position close to the surface.
